Our Return

So it’s been a great long while since we’ve posted on our blog – our sincere apologies for that. Hayley and I have been so busy this last year with work and wedding planning (Hayley) and uni and work (me).

Anyhow…without further ado – our big news…drumroll…the second novel of the Seraphim Series – The Healer has been finalised. Yippeee!

The last seven weeks or so has seen seven chapters written about Lucian, the Fallen Prince, entering the Biter Court and trying to align with the dangerous immortal undead race for his own devious designs.

Hayley is still putting her finishing touches on the last chapter but for me – it is all done!! A little taste – the last seven chapter titles were: Blood Bond, Genesis, Dark Pathways, Harbinger, The Harvest, Blood Feud and finally Pride. All set in several locations of the Eternal City also known as Rome.

Here’s hoping The Messenger, novel one is coming to a bookstore/kindle near you very soon and followed quickly by The Healer. Now planning phase for the next novel in the series – Teacher  begins 🙂

Character Bios for Michael and Lucian

Michael:

Michael is a gentle giant, sensitive and kind, the essence of compassion. Having lost both of his parents in a car tragedy, Michael instantly stepped up to be the guardian for his two younger brothers, Lucian and Nate. He can be counted on to do everything and anything to keep his brothers safe and content.

Quiet and humble, Michael shies away from the spotlight, much preferring the tranquility of home, or to live life behind the lens of his camera however, when he teams up with Gabe and Ewan he shows us he’s ready to explore the world once more by embarking on the Totem Quest. He is extremely loyal and brave, though should anyone threaten those he loves, they’d be brought down in a blaze of fury.

Powers: Strength, Speed, Empathy

Star Sign: Cancer

What the others think of Michael:

Gabe: Strong.

Ewan: Superman.

Rafe: Smug.

Michael: Brother.

Lucian:

After the death of his parents, Lucian withdrew from his brothers and into himself.  He became arrogant, rebellious to authority and secretive yet he was able to hide these traits from others beneath a mask of seductive, supermodel good looks and charismatic charm.

When Lucian meets Raven and discovers he is exceptional, it was no great surprise to him for he knew he was destined to be something more than just the most popular boy in school. His powers came on in a wave and he instantly used them to his advantage, manipulating his way into even greater power by bending others to his will. Tempted by the allure of power, Lucian embarks on a separate quest to that of his older brother Michael, one riddled with seduction and betrayal.

Powers: Suggestion, telepathy and pyrokinesis

Star Sign: Scorpio

What the others think of Lucian:

Gabe: Dangerous.

Ewan: Scary.

Michael: Lost, capricious

Rafe: Dick

Lucian: Messiah

Here is an extract near the beginning of the book which shows the three brothers, Michael, Lucian and Nate:

***

Nate’s spoon rattles, falling from his hand into his cereal bowl, mouth agape. Glancing over, Lucian sees Michael pale considerably.

“Holy crap!”

“Nathaniel,” Michael reproaches with an absent frown as he switches off the T.V., despite Nate’s roar of protest.

Clearing the table in silence, Michael avoids their stares. “Don’t believe everything you hear on T.V. guys. It wasn’t all they make it out to be.” He flicks a nervous glance towards Lucian before returning to the sink.

“You saved lives,” Lucian says, keeping his voice low, “Mine included. Everything they said about you was true.”

“He really saved you, Luce?” Nate asks.

“Sure did Natey. Like Superman to the rescue.”

Michael blushes, shaking his head, and Lucian smiles, enjoying seeing his older brother squirm for once.

Nate rockets from his chair, “Wait till my friends hear about this! Were you hurt?”

Lucian nods and pulls up his shirt.

“Wow!” Nate exclaims, enjoying the extra gory detail. He leans in, hand outstretched to touch the injuries.

Swatting a tea-towel Nate’s way, Michael groans, “Lucian, for crying out loud, don’t encourage him.”

Turning to Nate, Michael says, “Go grab your school stuff. We’re heading out soon so if you don’t want to walk, you better move your butt.”

Nate opens his mouth to argue but Michael cuts him off with an emphatic, “Pronto mister.”

Michael may be the newest King of Kennedy, but I think we’ve just unleashed their newest GOD!

Character Bios for Gabe, Ewan and Rafe

Hi guys and girls.

So sorry we haven’t been able to post lately. Hayley celebrated her birthday, moved into her own new house and has been teaching up a storm. Shaun also celebrated a birthday of his own, passed semester one’s uni exams and began planning a European holiday (Hayley’s sooooo jealous, though planning a way to smuggle into his luggage).

We’ve decided that since we’ve been slack, we are going to post character bios of our main characters. These bios reflect our characters mindsets in our first book – The Messenger. We hope you enjoy 🙂

Gabe:

Gabe is a fiery, independent, stubborn, highly opinionated young woman who regularly finds herself afflicted with foot in mouth disease. However, all’s generally forgiven when people get to know her and see that she is absolutely determined to do what is right and just. Gabe is a born leader who rushes headlong into every situation and, having accepted her visions of the atrocities that were to come, she’s been more determined than ever to put things right. She’s the bravest person we know and we pity those whom are foolish enough to stand in her way once she’s set her mind on something.

Power/s: Precognition, Clairvoyance, Clairsentience

Star Sign: Aries

What the others think of Gabe:

Ewan: Xena!

Michael: Leader.

Rafe: (rolls eyes) Bitch.

Gabe: Short.

Ewan:

Ewan, Gabe’s boyfriend, is a loveable, over exuberant, excitable mad professor, always on the quest of invention and discovery. He’s a highly logical thinker, though with his wild brown hair, flamboyant hand gestures and frequent cries of Eureka, we’re sure those who don’t know him would think he was a bit of a nutter. However, he’s so sweet they’d never tell him to his face. Bordering on genius, Ewan is always thinking, his entire being literally buzzing with energy even long after the puzzle has been solved. When he discovers he has “superpowers” Ewan immediately embraces his new path in life with his usual feverish enthusiasm. A loyal friend to everyone, Ewan is an honest and generous young man.

Powers: Omniscience (Knowledge)

Star Sign: Aquarius

What the others think of Ewan:

Gabe: Loyal.

Michael: Genius.

Rafe: Mad.

Ewan: (shrugs with a giggle)

Rafe:

Having had a difficult upbringing with the death of his beloved mother at a young age, Rafe is a complex, emotionally scarred young man, blind to his own worth. A loner, Rafe pushes others away with his sharp wit and sarcasm to avoid getting hurt. Rafe is always rebelling, against authority, against rules, against life and holds a deep anger inside of him which is the root to the enormous chip on his shoulder. For Rafe, his power has come too little, too late, only adding fuel to his anger and his bitterness. Streetwise and highly creative, Rafe is also an incredibly gifted musician, particularly with his violin which he uses as an escape from the world around him.

Power: healing, regeneration

Star Sign: Scorpio

What the others think of Rafe:

Gabe: Ugh, jerk.

Ewan: oooo the tortured musician!

Michael: Complicated.

Rafe: God.

We have selected an extract from Part 1 which we think gives an insight into the Gabe, Ewan and Rafe characters:

***

Glancing at Ewan, still hunched and scratching like a flea infested Quasimodo, Gabe tries a different tact. “You’re incredibly gifted at violin. You were playing Imagine right? By John Lennon?”

Ponytail shrugs, staring at her coolly with a jaded expression. Turning the collar of his black, leather jacket up like Elvis, he asks, “Did you want something? Or is this some lame attempt to ask me out?”

“No!” Gabe snaps, her cheeks flaring with heat.

Ponytail smirks and Gabe forces herself to take a deep breath, “I just…well, okay I’ll just come out and ask. This is going to sound a bit weird, but…I was wondering if you could have a look at this for us? We found it in the club.” Gabe gestures to Ewan who thrusts the compass towards Ponytail, his eyes squeezed shut behind his askew glasses.

The delicate arrow is a mere blur upon the white face, spinning wildly as though it knows the one it seeks is close.

Ponytail takes a step back, hands raised, “Yeah. Right.”

“Why not?”

Raising a contemptuous eyebrow, Ponytail says, “And risk catching whatever he’s got?” He gestures towards Ewan, and Gabe glances back to see him wriggling around like a dog trying to scratch his back on the ground.

Oh, help.

“He’s not contagious, he’s…”

“Whatever, Red.”

Happy Easter

Happy Easter everyone

Wow – it has been ages since either Hayley or I posted a blog – sorry about that – busy lives.

Hayley is working hard and trying to buy a house with her boyfriend while I’m back at uni – reading classics and preparing essays – Yaay …

Its actually pretty interesting – I’m studying Gothic Literature atm – which is helping me write the current Lucian storyline for book two – the Healer and the Narrative subject is very cool – short stories.

Bookwise – since we’ve been so busy lately, progress has slowed but today I was able to finish Part 1 of Lucian’s perspective for book two which I think will be the most difficult section to write – for me at least.

We’ve sent off the Messenger to a manuscript assessor which will hopefully given is an extra dimension of insight and I’ve also been attending an AWM seminar on how to pitch to publishers which is very rewarding.

I’ve also just finished reading Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare. I love that series and I love Jem but I have to admit I found the book a bit too long, some things were repeated too often and I saw the plot revelations coming. I did love Cassie Clare’s dialogue though and the epilogue was FANTASTIC!!

Well that’s it from us – will definitely post at least once a month from now on

Rafe’s Random Reflections

For those who have read a little bit about our main character for Book 2 – Rafe on our site, you’d know he’s pretty talented musically, (In fact, he’d say he’s “a f&$%ing music God!”) So we had a playlist we listened to pretty frequently when writing his perspective to help us get into “Rafe Mode”.

Being Rafe, his mood changed throughout the book from wrathful, to arrogant, to lonely, to melancholy, to hopeful, so the songs are a bit random.

Here’s a few:

Bitter Sweet Symphony – The Verve – This song sums Rafe up in a nutshell and makes an appearance in our first chapter.

It’s The End Of The World As We Know It – REM – and he feels, and we quote; “f%$*ing awesome”.

Just Ace – Grinspoon (Damn right I’m over it.)

Wonderwall – Oasis

Here Comes The Sun – The Beatles (Awwww!)

Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door – Bob Dylan (Oh no!!)

If you havent heard of some of these songs, maybe have a squiz on youtube – especially if you havent heard of The Beatles song…not that I’m biased or anything 😉

Life after the Mayan apocaplypse

Hi again!

Happy 2013!! Time sure flies when you’re having fun! Speaking of fun…Shaun and I have both been on holidays over Christmas although, sadly, they’re about to come to an end 😦 Shaun’s been off embracing his inner hobbit in New Zealand on the cruise of a lifetime whilst I’ve been visiting my family up in sunny (and muggy) Cairns.

On the writing front, Shaun’s been getting into dark and twisty mode so that he’s all set to write perspective two of The Healer. We also sent book one to a manuscript assessor who hopefully won’t rip it entirely to shreds…very excited to get the report back so we can fix whatever it is that’s holding us back!! 😛

Lifewise…we both LOVED The Hobbit and have seen it twice – Anyone else see Mitchell from Being Human as one of the dwarves? (Yes, there’s a bit of lust there…oops.) Also, I had to get my appendix hacked out by some sadistic doctors. After watching Kingdom Hospital I think my drug induced haze made me imagine some pretty freaky things that probably weren’t real o_O

For all those still on holidays, enjoy them while they last!

Hails and Shaun – Tag Team

P.S. Thanks to my Mum and sister who are currently taking part in the first outsider reading of The Healer…eeeeeeeek!

Christmas and Books and Presents Oh My…

Hey fans of the Seraphim Series

We have been a tad slack of late re blog posts but we promise it’s for all the right reasons.

Firstly, we’d like to wish everyone a happy upcoming Christmas and hope that it’s a happy and safe one with lots of terrific presents for all.

Secondly, we’d like to announce that we have finished the first draft of Rafe’s perspective of book two – The Healer! YAAAAAAY! Now it’s time for the Lucian perspective, so I guess its time to delve back into my dark side side… (Hayley gulps worriedly) 😉

Hayley has just finished her new teaching job and has begun her summer holidays – lucky duck. Hayley really loved teaching those kids she had this semester and she adored her going away present – a record with a photo of each of her kids – awwww!!

I have also finished uni for the semester which I’m happy about and have passed my three units 🙂 Finally I get to do some writing next semester!

Hayley and I have also been reading up a storm of late – we both adored Two Brothers by Ben Elton which is about Nazi Germany – awww Frieda… 😦 We also read the Pandora English Series by Tara Moss whom we were able to meet at a seminar earlier in the year. I’ve also read the Perks of a Wallflower and saw the movie with Hayley. I freaking loved the book and the movie!!!!! It also gave me an idea for a new book.

Speaking of which – Hayley and I have been busily coming up with ideas for books we’re going to develop after The Seraphim Series – I reckon they’re cool and of course they are somehow linked with each other in random ways which is great and a mini tribute to Mr King who is of course the master of doing just that. 🙂

We’re both presently procrastinating between the next stage of our writing so we’re having an 80’s moviethon today – we’ve watched Footloose, Back to the Future Part I (1.21 gigawatts!!!) and an aborted attempt at Heathers (grrr) Next up….Bueller…Bueller….?

Signing off

Happy Halloween

Hey Guys and Girls

Hayley and I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Halloween 2012 – we love this time of year and the supernatural interest it brings out in people!

Halloween plays quite a big role in the second book we’re currently writing in the Seraphim Series called The Healer. Book 2 is much darker and scarier than book 1 eeep!

I also wanted to give a  big shout out to some awesome Young Adult authors I’ve been reading recently as I’ve procrastinated whilst studying for my final exams at uni (eeeep to the Shakespeare exam this Saturday morning – 9 freaking plays). To Cinda Williams Chima and her Warrior Heir Series, the Demon Lexicon Series by Sarah Rees Brennan (which I got Hayley hooked on) and to Scott Tracey’s Witch Eyes and Demon Eyes which I devoured over the weekend.

I really loved the characters and the plot in both the Demon Lexicon (loved the dialogue) and the Witch Eyes and I especially loved the central character in the Witch Eyes…Braden – I love Scott Tracey’s writing and I wish I could steal his talent!!

Well I’m off – be good and hopefully after my uni exams I can kick along the effort to get an agent and get our Seraphim Series published as well as writing the Lucian perspective for The Healer!

PS – Thanks to my aunt Olive for reading out book and the kind words she shared with me 🙂

Oktoberfest

So, it’s been awhile since our last update as Shaun and I have been a little overrun with real-life dramas e.g. new jobs, 2,000 word Shakespeare essays (Quotes not included) and reading Tara Moss’ entire series about a certain Ms Vanderwall…(Yep, that was me.) But today we’re being productive and sending The Messenger to a few literary agents in Australia. Woop!

Bookwise Shaun’s been busy writing the next few chapters about a certain blonde ponytailed musician…We’ve been enjoying our series stint in the colourful city of San Francisco so far, only slightly dampened it’s been by demon types. 🙂

We’re almost at the end of writing one of our perspectives for book 2 save for the penultimate battle which is gonna be mad…P.S. Those innocuous little girls will get you everytime (eeeep!)

The day of the dead dawns and Samhain is ready to party!
We hope everyone enjoys a screamfilled night- remember to avoid all named Michael, Freddy and/or Jason.

Oktoberfest is on the cards for next week! “Prost!”

Hails and Shaun 🙂

Writer’s Festival

So today Shaun and I followed the black and grey road to the QLD Writer’s Festival where we attended an awesome industry masterclass on publishing and the like. It was really interesting! We heard from some agents, publishers and authors – David Vann and Tara Moss!

We thought it was really cool hearing  the  journey’s to publication from an author’s point of view, they both spoke so well and really motivated us to start sending our manuscript out there for agents to mosey over. (Eeeeeeep!)

The other “not so very pleasing thing” we learnt was that if our Book 2 ever gets published we may find ourselves meeting one of my idols Bob Dylan (yay!)  whilst being sued for breaching copyright on his song lyrics! (Boo!) I’d still ask him for an autograph though! 🙂

Needless to say, Shaun and I will definitely be writing to a few musicians in the near future asking permission. Let’s hope they’re nice to us!

With that in mind, has anyone ever written to a famous person before? If so, what for? And did you ever recieve a response?
